Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) raided the building, the national oil company Petronas recently over alleged corrupt practices among consultants involved in project work to explore and produce oil in Malaysian waters, the sources said.

The Malaysian Insider understands related files were taken by MACC officers and Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been informed before he went to Saudi Arabia to perform the hajj. The prime minister returned home Tuesday.

"Investigating officers were visiting the office due to many complaints to get rewards in return for the recommendation of a contract," one source told The Malaysian Insider, but did not want his identity disclosed.

Another source confirmed that investigations by the MACC has been notified to Najib and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. MACC does not endorse their actions for fear that would affect the investigation.

Industry sources said corruption over the years with increasing frequency, since in view of the Petronas gave a series of contracts involves various operations, including efforts to find new oil fields.

However, they do not say parts of the Petronas target MACC investigation.

"It is not uncommon. Everyone knows the game," he said.

Another source said that Petronas has held various management meetings to discuss the allegations of corruption among its employees, which is among those who received the highest salary in Malaysia, including loan interest, medical benefits and other incentives.

"They used to be the best working and honest but there are too many contracts in recent years and some simple steps," he said, adding that no officer of Petronas living beyond their means.

"Too much gossip and small talk back. There are contractors who complain they have to pay to get considered for the project. So no surprise that the MACC had to be there," he said.

Petronas was established in August 1974 and listed as one of the 500 largest corporations by the Fortune Global.

It ranked 107th last year after being in the top 100 list in 2008 and 2009.

Petronas has more than 40,000 permanent workers in Malaysia and 35 countries of operations.
