Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) offers the opportunity for inmates of prisons in this country to study for undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Vice Canselornya Prof Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the university will provide a place where there are applications from prisoners and the consent of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Department of Prisons.

"UUM now the preferred choice of corporate bodies, artists, government agencies, media practitioners and politicians to further their studies.

"If there is an application from the Department of Prisons to allow prisoners to further studies, we are prepared to work towards that," he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Director General of Prisons Datuk Zulkifli Omar who was asked to comment on the matter, said he would review the proposal after obtaining the consent of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Zulkifli said he saw an opportunity like that can give new light to the prisoners, as well as make prison a place for them to correct the error as a result of crime involved.

"We see these prisoners some of them have ignored and neglected by family and community and hope that this effort they will begin to be addressed," he said.

UUM has previously signed a consent agreement (MoA) with the Prisons Department for the implementation of post-graduate academic programs of Koreksional Graduate Diploma of Science.

Programs specially designed as a basic course for newly appointed deputy prison superintendent, in accordance with department needs to ensure that all its members to master the knowledge related to the field koreksional management.

The program focuses on the rehabilitation and management koreksional is the only postgraduate program in the country.
